Racism Incident Reporting Centre

A community-based reporting tool to track incidents of racism

project 1907’s reporting centre collects confidential data on incidents of racism, hate and violence experienced by the Asian diaspora in Canada. In the aggregate, data will be used to develop strategies, design interventions, raise awareness, advocate for policies and improve outcomes for our communities.

Incidents reported are brought together in an aggregate manner with the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter in a joint effort to analyze and better understand the national landscape of anti-Asian racism.

All personal information is kept confidential and is not shared with any local, provincial or federal law enforcement agencies without explicit consent.

Another Year: Anti-Asian Racism Across Canada Two Years Into the COVID-19 Pandemic (Mar 2022)

A new national report released by the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter and Project 1907 shows a continued and concerning rise in anti-Asian racism and xenophobia across Canada. This report looks at joint data for the collection period of January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021.

Key Findings (in relation to 2020):

  • A total of 943 reports were received through online platforms in 2021, representing a 47% increase. Reports were submitted in every province and territory across the country.

  • Women continue to submit the majority of incidents, making up nearly two-thirds of reports. The number of incidents reported by women and people of marginalized genders all increased.

  • Reports by South Asian and Southeast Asian people increased dramatically, by 318% and 121%, respectively.

  • Reports by children and adolescents (18 years and under) increased by 286%.

  • Reports of assault (being coughed at/spat on) increased by 42%.

  • Reports of online hate and racism increased by 132%.

  • New offender/perpetrator profile analysis this year finds that nearly 75% of submitted incidents report offenders/perpetrators as men and white

Recommendations from this report aim to tackle the history and on-going legacies of anti-Asian sentiment in Canada that predate and have been exacerbated by the pandemic. This is the second collaborative report on anti-Asian racism across Canada from CCNCTO and Project 1907, following a first report in March 2021.

Anti-Asian Racism: Then and Now (Sep 2021)

On the anniversary of the 1907 Anti-Asian Riots, we take a look at how history continues to inform the present.

As reports of anti-Asian racism continue to increase, the trends demonstrate consistency:

  • British Columbia continues to report the most incidents per capita of any North American province, state or territory. California is second to B.C. and leads in reports per capita in the United States. Both British Columbia and California were homes to historic branches of the Asiatic Exclusion League, a racist organization advocating for a “white man’s country”.

  • By city, Vancouver continues to report the highest number of incidents per capita. This is followed by Victoria, Toronto, Burnaby and Richmond, meaning 4 of the 5 leading cities for reported anti-Asian incidents are located in British Columbia.

  • Canada continues to report a higher number of anti-Asian racism incidents per capita than the United States by over 100%.

To learn more about the riots in Vancouver, visit https://360riotwalk.ca/, an interactive walking tour tracing the history and route of the riots using 360° video technology. The audio is available in 4 languages of the local residents of the period: English, Cantonese, Japanese and Punjabi.

Updated Trends (Jun 2021)

2021 continues to see a rise in incidents of anti-Asian racism in Canada. In the first 5 months of 2021 alone, there were over 50% more incidents reported than in all of 2020.

Analysis of incidents reported to elimin8hate.org and covidracism.ca confirms the following disturbing trends and patterns:

  • Canada continues to report a higher number of anti-Asian racism incidents per capita than the United States. The incidences reported per capita in Canada are double those reported in the United States.

  • B.C. continues to report the most incidents per capita of any North American province, state or territory. By city, Vancouver has the highest number of reported incidents per capita.

  • Women continue to be disproportionately impacted, reporting 2 out of 3 incidents.

  • Verbal abuse and harassment continue to be widespread, included in 67% of all reported incidents.

  • Assaults, including targeted coughing, spitting and physical attacks and violence, make up 1 in 4 incidents.

This initiative focuses on the experiences of people in the Asian diaspora, in response to growing anti-Asian racism resulting from COVID-19. Our deepest appreciation to the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON) and Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) in the United States for being leaders in this effort.

We strive to do our work in solidarity with Black, Indigenous, People of Colour and all racialized groups. We acknowledge that the shared root of our experiences is white supremacy culture, which harms us all.
